History of Lolla
The idea for Lollapalooza originated in 1991 with the frontman of the band Jane's Addiction, Perry Farrell, who used it as a farewell tour.
The initial Lollapalooza tour featured a wide range of musicians and was a financial success.
It made stops in more than 20 North American cities.
Then, until 1997, Lollapalooza was held yearly before being brought back in 2003.
The festival traveled throughout North America from its inception through 1997 and its resurgence in 2003.
Poor ticket sales forced the cancellation of the 2004 tour when the organizers opted to increase the dates to two days per location.
Lollapalooza, explained
The annual Lollapalooza music event takes place in Chicago's Grant Park over four days. In 1991, it began as a traveling event, but a few years later, Chicago became its permanent home.
Alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic dance music are just a few examples of different musical genres. Visual arts, nonprofits, and political organizations have all been featured during Lollapalooza.
Every year, the festival, which takes place in Grant Park, sells out and draws an estimated 400,000 visitors in July.
One of the biggest and most recognizable music festivals in the world, Lollapalooza is also one of the oldest in the United States.
